The System Went Up So the Ceilings Could Stay

Running new ductwork through a finished Murrayhome usually means drop boxes: framed-out soffits that carry ducts below the ceiling and shave inches off every room they cross. This homeowner didn't want to give up that headroom, and he didn't have to. We installed the Goodman furnace and air handler on a platform in the attic and ran the ductwork up there with it, so the rooms below kept their full ceilings.

What an attic install has to get right

Attics punish sloppy work. Utah attics swing from freezing to well over 130°F, so every duct up there is insulated and every plenum is wrapped; leaky or bare ductwork in that environment throws money into the rafters. The unit sits on a raised platform above the blown-in insulation with a serviceable pan and drain beneath it, the flex runs are strapped so they hold their shape, and the gas line comes up through its own sealed penetration. It has to be as tidy as a basement install, in a space nobody will ever stand up in.

The payoff is what you don't see

Walk the rooms below and there's nothing to notice: no soffits, no lowered hallway ceiling, just ceiling registers. That's the whole point, and it's why the homeowner told us he was so pleased with how the house looked when we finished. For some homes, especially ones without a basement or with finished ceilings worth protecting, the attic is the honest answer to "where does the equipment go?"
